WAYNE CITY – St. Mary defeated Wayne City, 13-1, Monday afternoon in Junior High softball action.
Claire Heinzman struck out 19 batters and allowed two hits. Justice Malone had an inside-the-park home run in the first inning. Zoey Shields was walked twice, tripled twice and scored two runs.
St. Mary hosts Bethel/McClellan on Wednesday and travels to Dix to take on Rome on Friday.
KINMUNDY – Field finished second at the Kinmundy tournament Saturday. The Panthers committed seven errors in the championship game against a solid Class M program.
After Patoka tied the game with two runs in the top of the fifth inning, Field came through with a run to take Game 1.
Kodie VanEycke was 2-for-3. Kaycee Meyer was 1-for-2. Ashlyn Childers finished 1-for-2 and Aliya Williams was 2-for-3 with a triple.
Childers picked up the win striking out three and walking none.

WOODLAWN – Both Woodlawn and Sesser-Valier/Waltonville opened the 2017 season against one another Thursday evening, and it took three games to decide the winning as the Red Devils earned a 25-23, 19-25, 25-23 victory in high school volleyball action.
“I’m on the verge of tears,” said SVW coach Rachel Payne. “I’m so excited. We have a to-do list and it was to take Woodlawn to three. We did, so I was excited.”

ODIN – St. Mary improved to 8-1 on the season with a 14-3 victory Wednesday afternoon in Junior High softball action.
Claire Heinzman was the winning pitcher with 10 strikeouts.

BLUFORD – Mt. Vernon opened the season Thursday evening with a three set victory over Webber Township, 25-19, 19-25, 25-13, in high school volleyball action.

BELLEVILLE – The Mt. Vernon Rams’ boys soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Metro-East Lutheran at the Metro Cup tournament in Belleville.

MARION – The Mt. Vernon Lady Rams’ cross country team placed three runners in the top four spots but did not field a complete team Wednesday afternoon in high school cross country action.
The boys featured eight in the varsity race and finished third as a team.
