MT. VERNON – Fighting back after winning Game 1, the Mt. Vernon Lady Rams defeated West Frankfort Thursday night, 25-11, 26-24, in high school volleyball action.

In Game 2 the Lady Rams trailed 21-10 before battling back to win the match in straight sets.

“How they battled back, how they came back, it speaks so much [to] all the work they’ve been doing when it comes to that mentality we’re trying to reach,” said Mt. Vernon coach Brooke Poninski. “It was really good to come back that second game to win and what did that for us is that mental state we had.

“The key is what team is [more] hungry. Our Rams were hungry for that win. Nothing was going to get in their way. When they realized if they could come back and stop making mistakes, that win would come back to us.”

After the weekend at the Carbondale Preview Tournament, the Lady Rams are 2-4. Mt. Vernon lost to Anna-Jonesboro (25-22, 21-25, 20-18), Waterloo (25-17, 25-7), Salem (25-17, 25-9) and Marion (25-4, 25-17).

Mt. Vernon hosts Centralia Tuesday.
