WOODLAWN – Both Woodlawn and Sesser-Valier/Waltonville opened the 2017 season against one another Thursday evening, and it took three games to decide the winning as the Red Devils earned a 25-23, 19-25, 25-23 victory in high school volleyball action.

“I’m on the verge of tears,” said SVW coach Rachel Payne. “I’m so excited. We have a to-do list and it was to take Woodlawn to three. We did, so I was excited.”

The Lady Cardinals found themselves trailing 20-14 in the final set but tied it up (23-23) before the Red Devils rolled off two straight points to close it out.

“They weren’t playing to win, they were playing not to lose,” said Woodlawn coach Sara Lamczyk. “Offensive we’re a powerhouse, but you couldn’t see it tonight, I feel, as much as they should have.

“Our sets were fine. Our hits were fine. I just felt like we just kept playing it safe. We can’t be a defensive team. We let them be in the driver’s seat.”

Payne credits her team’s serving as one of the key factors to the Red Devils’ victories in Games 1 and 3. SVW was trailing 11-9 in the third game when Dakota Quinn served eight straight points to put the Red Devils on top, 17-12, after the side-out.

“She [Quinn] did that third game and Julie Baumgarte in that first game. That really helped up and we really stressed how important serving is because if you can’t get it over the net, there’s no reason to play. I’m ecstatic with their serves.”

The Red Devils finished Game 3 off with a kill from Adrianna Fedderke and then a tip at the net by Carlie Page to win the match.

“She [Carlie Page] is really coming into her own,” said Payne. “She’s really starting to get that varsity mentality. [Adrianna Fedderke] has played about every position while we’ve had her in the program. {Paige Tucker] has been in the middle in jayvee then we moved her to the outside. I know they’re capable hitters.”

Hannah Estes helped bring the Lady Cardinals back in the third game with her serving. She rattled off four straight points to bring Woodlawn closer at, 21-18 after a side-out by SVW.

“I feel like we were super nervous,” said Lamczyk. “They said they weren’t, but you could tell they were a little nervous. I feel that got the best of them.

“We have a little youth playing on our team. We have two seniors and it’s just a little different to have a freshman and a sophomore and a junior that’s never played in with girls that have played since they were sophomores.”

Later, Madison Tiemann picked up three service points with help from a kill by Breanna Sanders that tied the matched, 22-22.

The Red Devils finished the match by winning three of the next four points.

“They’re all about what side they’re on,” said Payne. “When we came back to this side [Game 3] it was like home. We got back to that and we’re still learning to get through those lulls. Those lulls that kill every team. You’ve just got to learn to get through them.”

Paige Tucker had seven kills. Addy Snow finished with two aces. Abbie Ward had six digs and Carlie Page finished with seven blocks and five kills.

“I have a young team,” said Payne. “I lost 10 girls from last year’s team. For them to have this win it’s just amazing for them. We still have a lot to work on and I hope we can keep going like this. This is great.”

For Woodlawn, Estes had four blocks, six digs, three aces and eight kills. Sanders finished with three aces and five kills, while Tiemann tallied five blocks.

Rayci Brown had 18 assists and Ashytn Barton picked up four blocks.

“I think it’s sometimes good to take a loss and see how it feels,” said Lamczyk. “It’s not a great feeling. You either come back from it and dig deep and this gives them the chance to see what they’re made of.”

SVW (1-0) is at home Saturday at 11 AM against Chester. Woodlawn (0-1) is at home Monday against South Central.
