Mt. Vernon 14U tennis team splits doubleheader match with Benton

BENTON – The  Mt. Vernon 14U tennis team went 1-1 Tuesday morning in two matches played against Benton.

Benton won the first match, 24-15, while Mt. Vernon edged Benton in the second match, 22-21.

In the first match, Zach Pierce and Cole McDannel defeated Elijah Jennings and Avery Henderson, 6-0, in a boys doubles match. That was the only match of the five Mt. Vernon won.

Haylie Young and Emma Maxey lost in girls doubles to Kendra Metzger and Adri Tonn, 6-0. Cameron Metzger defeated Brandymv tennis pic 2n Wilcoxen, 6-4, in boys singles.

Taylor Moore bested Lindsey Lehman, 6-2, in girls singles. Cameron Metzger and Brianna Nestler defeated Caleb Bradley and Emma Maxey, 6-3, in mixed doubles.

In the second match, Mt. Vernon narrowly defeated Benton by one point. The match was tied 21-21, as the duo of McDannel and Bradley competed in the final contest against Cameron Metzger and Elijah Jennings.  mv tennis 1

The boys doubles match went to a tiebreaker with Bradley and McDannel winning the tiebreaker, 9-7, to win the set, 6-5, and give Mt. Vernon the point they needed to win, 22-21.

In the girls doubles, Lehman and Maxey defeated Jaylyn Blake and Trinity Price, 6-4. In the girls singles match, Benton’s Kelsey Bayess defeated Young, 6-0.

In the boys’ match, Avery Henderson defeated Liam Bullard, 6-4. In a mixed doubles match, Lindsey Leyman and Cole McDannel won, 6-0.

Mt. Vernon (1-3) will travel to Casey next Tuesday to take on Casey-Westfield and Teutopolis.
