MT. VERNON – The Jefferson County Sports Authority hosted its annual Memorial Day weekend baseball tournament. Mt. Vernon’s 10U and 13U baseball teams each finished in second place in their respective brackets.
The 10U team defeated Carmi, 9-5, to advance to the championship. In the finals, Mt. Vernon was bested by the Aces – a travel team based out of Williamson County. The 13U team lost to the Young Guns, who scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to win it.
In the first inning for Mt. Vernon’s 10U team against Carmi, Blake Sanders doubled and scored the first run of the game. Carmi scored twice in the second and led, 2-1, and then added a run in the third for a 3-1 lead.
Mt. Vernon used a five-run third to jump out in front, 6-3. Brogan Holloway singled and Trevor McClure walked. Both eventually scored to tie the game.
Keaton Plummer hit a double, Sanders singled and Cole Timmons doubled as all three came around to score to contribute to Mt. Vernon’s five-run inning.
Carmi was retired in order in the top of the fourth inning. Mt. Vernon managed to add on to its lead with a run in the home half of the fourth to make it a 7-3 lead.
Carmi scored twice in the fifth and still trailed Mt. Vernon, 7-5. Mt. Vernon got both runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Sanders singled and scored on a Drew Wheeler triple, who later scored on a wild pitch.
Plummer was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Sanders was 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored. Wheeler was 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.
Timmons was 1-for-3 with a double and run scored. Anderson Barker finished 2-for-3 and Malakai Mays walked.
Diedrich Smith was 1-for-2, while Holloway and McClure were both 1-for-1 on the day.
The 10U team lost the championship to the Aces, 18-5 and scored three runs in the second and two in the third.
The Mt. Vernon 13U team trailed, 5-4, to the Young Guns in the top of the seventh inning but scored the tying run. The Young Guns went on to win in the bottom of the inning.
The Young Guns led, 1-0, with a run in the bottom of the first inning. After a scoreless second inning, Mt. Vernon scored four runs to take a 4-1 lead. However, in the bottom of the third, the Young Guns tied it with three runs.
The games stayed tied until the fifth when the Young Guns scored to take a 5-4 lead. Drake Hicks reached on an error to start the seventh inning. He eventually came around to score to tie the game.
Roman Harrison led the 13U team at the plate as he was 2-for-4 with a RBI. Colin McClure was 1-for-4 with a run scored. Gauge Massey finished 1-for-2 with a RBI and Hicks was 1-for-3 and scored twice.
