CARBONDALE – The Mt. Vernon Rams won the Class 3A Carbondale regional Saturday with a 4-0 victory over Massac County in high school baseball action.
The championship was Mt. Vernon’s sixth regional title in eight seasons. They move on to the Salem Sectional Wednesday at 4 PM to take on Civic Memorial.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Walker Brockhouse hit a solo home run to make it a 1-0 lead for the Rams.
Mt. Vernon went on to score twice more in the inning to lead, 3-0, after four. After Brockhouse’s home run,, Bill Beckham singled to left field. He stole second and moved to third when Parker Wielt reached on a bunt single.
Wielt stole second and Chandler Meyer struck out. The ball got away from the catcher. With first base unoccupied, Meyer tried to reach however he was throw out at first. On the play, Beckham scored to make it 2-0.
After the second out of the inning, Brandon Rutherford delivered a RBI single to left to score Wielt to put the Rams on top, 3-0.
Mt. Vernon managed to take on its fourth and final run in the sixth inning. Thursday’s winning pitcher Quinton Kujawa walked. He stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Beckham.
Brockhouse got the win on the mound. He threw seven innings scattering three hits, walking three, striking out nine and allowing no runs.
Rutherford was 2-for-2 with a run scored and two stolen bases to lead the way. Brockhouse, Beckham, Wielt all had hits.
