HARRISBURG – Waltonville/Sesser-Valier will play for a sectional championship Saturday morning after knocking off the defending Class 2A state champions Tuesday night.
The Spartans defeated Carterville, 5-2, to win the second semifinal contest at the Harrisburg Sectional.
Carterville started the game scoring two runs in the top of the first inning against WSV starting pitcher Gretchen Witter. From that point on, Witter shut down the Lions and helped the Spartans pick up their 30th victory of the season.
In the third inning, WSV got on the board. Taylor Witges reached on an error and eventually scored on a base hit from Taylor Frank.
The lead stayed 2-1 until the fourth when the Spartans tied it up. Jesse Eubanks hit a one-out double. After a strikeout for the second out of the inning, Hannah Garascia singled to score Eubanks to tie it up.
The Spartans then captured the lead after a base hit from Witges to score Garascia, who advanced to second during the at-bat on a stolen base.
WSV kept the pressure on in the fifth with a solo home run from Olivia Massie for a 4-2 lead. Then in the sixth, the Spartans added another insurance run. Garascia walked, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice from Witges and then scored on a fielder’s choice from Witter.
Witter allowed two runs on seven hits. She walked none and struck out three. She made six putouts. Not one out was made by the outfielders as Witter managed to keep Carterville hitting the ball on the ground.
Garascia was 2-for-3 with a run scored, three stolen bases, a RBI and a walk. Witges had a hit with a run scored and a RBI. Frank doubled and had a RBI.
Massie had a pair of hits which included her solo home run and a RBI and Rylee Breeze finished 2-for-3 on the day.
WSV moves on the sectional championship where they’ll face Pinckneyville at 11 AM. The two teams were scheduled to play in March, but the game was canceled because of inclement weather. The game was never rescheduled.
