CARMI – The Waltonville/Sesser-Valier Lady Spartans defeated Carmi/White County Monday afternoon, 7-5, to win the Class 2A high school softball regional.
WSV advances to face the defending class 2A state champs Carterville Tuesday at the Harrisburg Sectional.
Olivia Massie got the scoring started for the Lady Spartans in the bottom of the first inning with a grand slam homerun. Along for the ride was Taylor Witges, Gretchen Witter, and Taylor Frank.
Carmi responded in the top half of the second to tie the game.
Breona Owen singled and reached second on an error then scored on a double from Makynna Shaffer to open the Bulldogs’ scoring.
Shaffer came around to score on a hit from Carlee Hart. Then, after a Gabbie Brown base hit, Madison Wenzel singled to drive home two and tie the game.
The Spartans quickly got the lead back win two runs in the bottom of the second inning. MiKayla Robbers and Hannah Garascia scored in the inning to make it a 6-4 lead in favor of the Lady Spartans.
WSV tacked on another run in the fourth inning. Robbers singled and eventually scored on a single from Witter to make it a 7-4 lead in favor of the Spartans.
The Bulldogs managed to get within a pair with a run in the sixth, but it was too little too late for Carmi as the Spartans advance after winning the regional championship.
It’s the first regional championship won by the Spartans in softball since 2004. WSV will play Carterville at 6:30 PM in the second semifinal contest. The first sectional semifinal between Pinckneyville and Nashville will start at 4:30 PM.
