Mt. Vernon wins tennis match on senior night against Massac County

MT. VERNON – Visiting Massac County came with only five tennis players Tuesday afternoon meaning the Patriots would forfeit in six singles and three doubles.

On the court, the Rams dominated and won 9-0 at Veterans Park. It was senior day and the last regular season match for Bryan Bain and Phoenix Graham.

“I’m happy for them,” said Mt. Vernon coach Randy Knox. “They were able to pick up the win on senior day. They’ve played well for us all year.”

The seniors don’t normally team up in doubles, but Knox gave them the chance to do so and they won, 6-2, 6-1. Mt. Vernon kept its normal one doubles team together as Will Walton and Daniel Song were winners, 6-0, 6-1.

Thanks to their now 11-1 record and beating every other team in the sectional, Walton and Song should enter the Carbondale Class A sectional Friday as the No. 1 seed.

“They’re both solid in all aspects of the game,” said Knox. “They both can play the net well. They’re both smart players. They can place the ball well. They have good ground strokes too. They communicate well on the court.”

Knox says teaming them up in sectional has been the plan since summer.

“That was the plan,” said Knox. “From the summer program, we knew they were a good doubles team. I thought they’d be best going in as doubles.”

Walton won at No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-2) and Song was a winner at two singles, 6-1, 6-0.

Gerett Benjamin won at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-4. Bain played at No. 4 singles and won, 6-1, 6-0, while Michael Barbon was the winner at five singles, 6-0, 6-1.

In addition to Walton and Song, the Rams will feature the team of Bain and Benjamin as the team’s second doubles pair at sectional, while Barbon and Phoenix will play as singles.

Sectional is in Carbondale and starts Friday and concludes on Saturday.
