BLUFORD – Wins have been few and far between this year for Webber Township, but on Monday the Lady Trojans picked up a much-needed confidence boost as they defeated Cisne, 9-3, to win the play-in game in class A regional softball action.

“We haven’t won many games this year so anytime we get a win I am very happy,” Greg Alvis. “We’ve had injuries. We don’t have any seniors but the girls have continued to battle and played hard.”

Cisne opened the game with a run in the top of the first inning but the Trojans quickly answered with two runs in the home half of the inning.

Kenzi Hutchison doubled and Hayley Hicks singled her home. Hicks made her way to third with less than two outs and scored on a ground ball out off the bat of Emma Moser to take a 2-1 lead.

Then in the third inning, Hicks led off with a walk. Bekah Marlow also reached thanks to a single before Taylor Drew picked up a RBI as the Trojans extended their lead, 4-1, after three.

“We’ve played good competition and I think they just need confidence,” said Alvis. “Getting a win today is going to help their confidence. I just think we’ve got to keep battling.”

In the bottom of the fourth, Webber Township tacked on three more runs and all came with two outs. Hutchinson singled and Hicks walked. Both scored on a double off the bat of Macy Anderson.

Then a single from Moser scored Anderson to give the Trojans a 7-1 lead.

Finally, in the fifth inning, Webber added two more runs as Abby Dolgner and Hutchinson each walked with the bases loaded.

“That was the best part of the game because we extended it with the bottom of the batting order,” said Alvis. “The girls were selective at the plate, got some nice walks, got a couple timely hits. Girls that aren’t part of our run producing component were able to get that and extend that lead for us.”

Hicks picked up the win. She threw seven innings allowing nine hits and struck out eight.

“Our pitcher did a great job,” said Alvis. “She stayed around the plate and just was in control of the game. We didn’t play a perfect game. We made mistakes in the field, but all-in-all it was very positive and I’m pleased with our performance.”

Hutchinson was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, a stolen base, a RBI and a run scored. Hicks was 2-for-2 with two walks, while Anderson added a two-RBI double and Drew was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.

The Trojans (4-14) will not head to Woodlawn to complete against the No. 2 seed Cardinals.

“Woodlawn is obviously the favorite and a tremendous team,” said Alvis. “I told the girls after the game, ‘you played them close the first time. There’s no reason you can’t go over there with some confidence and at least compete and play hard.’”

The game is scheduled for 4:30 PM.
