Jefferson County teams aim to make postseason run

JEFFERSON COUNTY – It’s that time of the year. The time teams prepare for postseason play. High school baseball and softball regional action in class 1A and 2A begin this week, with 3A and 4A opening the following week. High school baseball and softball regional action in class 1A and 2A begin this week, with 3A and 4A opening the following week.

Woodlawn softball will host a Class 1A regional with Mt. Vernon’s softball team also playing host to a regional in Class 3A.

The Lady Rams are in the play-in game on Monday, May 22. Mt. Vernon is the No. 7 seed and will host No. 9 Salem at 4:30 PM with the winner facing second-seed Herrin on May 22.

The Lady Cardinals will wait a day to find out who they play. Woodlawn is the No. 2 seed and will take on the winner of the play-in game the night before. The play-in game is between No. 9 Cisne against No. 7 Webber Township in Bluford.

There are two teams from the area that are No. 1 seeds in their subsectional. Coming off a Midland Trail Conference tournament championship Wednesday afternoon, Waltonville/Sesser-Valier is the top seed at the Class 2A Carmi Regional. They’ll play the winner of the play-in game between No. 9 Hamilton County as they travel to No. 8 Fairfield.

Mt. Vernon’s baseball team is the No. 1 seed at Carbondale. They will await the winner of the play-in game between No. 8 Murphysboro and No. 7 Carbondale.

In a Class 2A baseball regional at Fairfield, Waltonville/Sesser-Valier is the No. 3 seed and will face Carmi at 7 PM on Tuesday.

Finally, Christ Our Rock Lutheran is hosting a Class A baseball regional that will feature the Woodlawn Cardinals and Webber Township Trojans.

Both will compete in play-in games. Woodlawn is the No. 8 seed and will travel to No. 6 Brownstown. The Trojans are the five-seed and will host No. 11 CORL. Both games are Monday 4:30 PM.

In addition, the Mt. Vernon Lady Rams’ soccer team enters 2A regional Tuesday against Marion at Wildcat Stadium. Also, coming from their South 7 conference and sectional championships, the Mt. Vernon Lady Rams will make their way to Charleston and the campus of Eastern Illinois University to compete at the IHSA state finals.

Thursday will mark the start of the boys sectional as Mt. Vernon will compete at Mascoutah. Field events begin at 11 AM and running events at 12:30 PM.

Finally, the boys’ tennis sectional starts Friday. The Rams will compete at the Class A Carbondale Sectional.
