SALEM – For the first time since the IHSA went to three classes in track and field, the Mt. Vernon Lady Rams have won a sectional championship after winning at Salem Thursday night.
The Lady Rams finished as high as second since the IHSA moved to three classes back in 2008-09 and did that the past two seasons.
Mt. Vernon finished with 109 points to claim first place. Mascoutah was second with 86 followed by Freeburg (79), Carbondale (76) and then Centralia in fifth with 71.25 points.
With the team title, several individuals will advance to the Class 2A state finals.
Mt. Vernon’s 4×200 Meter Relay Team finished second and qualified for state with a time of 1:47.51.
As far as individuals are concerned, A’Veun Moore-Jones qualified for the Shot Put and Discus. Moore-Jones won the Discus with a throw of 135-feet. She was second in the Shot Put at 45-05.50.
Madison Goodheart qualified after finishing second in the High Jump at 5-01. Dazha Woods was second in the Triple Jump at 33-11.
Aneeya Taylor won the 100-Meter High Hurdles with a time of 16.03. Tredaja Harris won the 100-Meter Dash with a time of 12.67 as well as the 200-Meter Dash in a time of 26.50. Kate Bushue was triumphant in the 1600-Meter Run with a first-place time of 5:15.42.
The state finals are this weekend at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
