MT. VERNON – Coming back home after finishing second at the Fairfield tournament Saturday, the Mt. Vernon Lady Rams followed that up with a victory at home Monday afternoon against Fairfield, 4-3, in high school softball action.
With the victory, the Lady Rams have won three of their last four games.
“This is the time of the year where you want to be gaining some momentum,” said Lady Rams coach Bill England. “We’re doing what we need to do to win ballgames.”
Mt. Vernon trailed heading into the fifth inning before scoring twice in the inning to take the lead.
Kalyn Baum led off the fifth inning by reaching base on an error. Gabby Boles came into the game to run for Baum. MacKenzie Mcilrath advanced Boles on a sacrifice bunt.
After a second out of the inning, Ashton McPherson stepped to the plate and delivered a RBI single into left field.
The single tied the game then with McPherson on third, she scored on a throwing error by the catcher to put Mt. Vernon on top, 4-3.
Danielle Barczewski picked up the victory. She allowed six hits, three runs, one walk and struck out four.
“Danielle threw the ball well,” said England. “A senior [with] senior leadership. [She] minimized her walks and let the defense defend her.”
The Mules opened with two runs in the top of the first inning. Lexi Hobbs led off the game with a single. She stole second and Kylar Slover singled. Katelyn Lambert singled home Hobbs and Bethany Brooks’ base hit allowed Slover to score to put Fairfield on top, 2-0.
Mt. Vernon responded with two runs of their own in the first inning to tie the game.
Ashton McPherson led off the inning with a single and stole second. Sydney Morgan singled and stole second.
Brooklyn Kelley grounded out to second to score McPherson and Jordyn Bauer tied the game up on a ground ball out to shortstop allowing Morgan to score and tie the game.
“We’ve not played ahead in very many ballgames this year,” said England. “That’s one thing we’ve tried to work on is bouncing back and we did that today.”
Fairfield took the lead back in the third inning. Slover singled and scored on a double from Brooks to put the Mules up 3-2.
The lead stayed that way until the bottom of the fifth inning when Mt. Vernon scored two runs to take a 4-3 lead.
“I’ve been talking all year long [about the little things] and the last week we have done those little things,” said England. “We lost a one-run game there Friday at Collinsville. We bounced back Saturday and had a good tournament over in Fairfield and we’re going to continue.”
The Lady Rams finished with five hits. McPherson was 2-for-3 with a RBI, two runs scored and a double. Morgan finished 2-for-3 with two stolen bases. Addison Sargent had the other base hit for Mt. Vernon.
“I think we’ve got five, one-run losses this year and a couple other games that were close that we were in and couldn’t pull out [the win],” said England. “[This win] is big for us. It’s big for our ball team. We’ve got regionals here in a couple weeks and you want to get some momentum going into regional.”
The Lady Rams are 9-15 and travel to Centralia on Tuesday.
